Last gasp goal Feyenoord knocks Ajax out of Dutch Cup

Xinhua, October 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

An own goal by Joel Veltman in injury-time earned Feyenoord a 1-0 win against Ajax in the third round of the Dutch Cup, the KNVB Beker, on Wednesday in Rotterdam.

In a packed and steaming De Kuip stadium Ajax started the match as the better team in the cup classic between the long-time rivals, currently leading the Dutch Eredivisie together. The home team put more and more pressure in the second half and also created some chances.

After 90 minutes of regular playing time both teams still hadn't found the net and extra time seemed necessary. However, in the fifth minute of injury-time Feyenoord finally scored and excited the home fans.

Karim El Ahmadi curled a free-kick into the penalty area of Ajax and under pressure of Feyenoord captain Dirk Kuijt it was Ajax defender Veltman who put the ball behind his own goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, who had replaced injured Diederik Boer in the 77th minute.

With the win Feyenoord followed PSV, which beat amateur club SC Genemuiden 6-0 on Tuesday, to the last 16 of the Dutch Cup. Ajax can take revenge on Feyenoord on November 8 already, when both clubs meet again in Rotterdam for a league encounter. Enditem
