Timberwolves coach Saunders dies of cancer

Xinhua, October 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Minnesota Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders died of cancer, said the NBA franchise on Sunday.

Saunders, 60, died of Hodgkins' lymphoma after he was diagnosed in August.

"It is with extreme sadness that the Minnesota Timberwolves today learned that Phil 'Flip' Saunders, who served as the team's President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach, in addition to being a minority owner of the team, passed away today at age 60," the Timberwolves announced on their website.

Saunders leaves as the Minnesota coach with the best all-time win record during his two tours of duty with the T-Wolves.

He compiled a 427-392 regular-season record, as well as guiding them to their only Western Conference final appearance in 2004 before being fired the next season.

Overall, Saunders owns a 654-592 mark in 17 NBA seasons, including stints at Detroit and Washington. Endite
