Former Chinese Ambassador visits Cambodia to gather input for Lancang-Mekong River Cooperation

Xinhua, October 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Zhang Jinfeng is visiting Cambodia to gather input for the establishment of the Lancang-Mekong River Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism.

The Lancang-Mekong River runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and serves as a natural bond that links the six countries together.

Speaking in a press briefing here on Monday, Zhang said that in Cambodia, she would meet with Cambodian foreign ministry officials and researchers at the Cambodia Development Resource Institute to get information for the mechanism.

"The upcoming Lancang-Mekong River Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism will give priorities to five major sectors: connectivity infrastructure development, economic, trade and investment promotion, water resources and environment protection, poverty reduction, and agricultural development," she said.

The former diplomat said the initiative is aimed to serve the common interests of the six countries in their development and poverty reduction.

"I have learnt that all involved countries have voiced their full support for this mechanism," she said. "I believe that through the upcoming mechanism, the six Greater Mekong Sub-region countries will be able to further enhance their relations and cooperation in all fields, particularly in politics, economics and culture."

The Lancang-Mekong River Dialogue and Cooperation Mechanism was initiated by Thailand. Endit
