97 militants killed in Afghanistan within day

About 97 militants have been killed amid Afghan security forces' cleanup operations since early Sunday, the country's Defense Ministry said on Monday morning.

"A total of 97 insurgents, including their four local commanders, were killed, 65 wounded and four others detained after Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) conducted cleanup operations over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates.

The raids were lunched in Kunar, Laghman, Parwan, Kabul, Ghazni, Herat, Badghis and Helmand provinces, out of the country's 34 provinces, the statement added.

"Up to six army soldiers were martyred as a result of separate attacks across the country over the same period," the statement noted.

The ANSF also found and seized weapons, in addition to defusing dozens of roadside bombs and landmines, the statement said.

Afghan security forces have pressed on clearing the militants in restive provinces as Taliban militants have been attempting to take territory and consolidate their positions ahead of winter in the mountainous Central Asian country.

The Taliban, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments. Enditem
