India says deaf and mute Indian girl to return from Pakistan next week

Xinhua, October 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

India Friday said that a deaf and mute girl, who has been stranded in Pakistan for the past 10 years, will return home next week.

"On Oct. 26, Geeta will be back to India, with five members of Edhi Foundation who will be treated as state guests," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said.

Geeta has been living in Pakistan since accidentally crossing the international border a decade ago and a non-government organisation, Edhi Foundation, is taking care of her.

"We will do a DNA test to establish conclusive proof of relation with the family Geeta has identified. If the DNA test is positive, we will hand over Geeta to the family," Swarup said.

Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has been instrumental in ensuring that Geeta returns home at the earliest date. Endit
