A defense witness in the case against Ratko Mladic at the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was found dead at his hotel in The Hague on Thursday.
Dusan Dunjic, a forensic expert from Serbia, was expected to testify in court on Thursday. According to a statement by the ICTY he was found dead at his hotel by a hotel staff member and a representative of the Tribunal. Emergency services were immediately notified and ascertained his death.
Dutch authorities are conducting an investigation into Dunjic's death. The professor of forensic medicine from Belgrade had testified as expert witness for defense and prosecution in a number of cases before the ICTY, in for instance the trial of former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.
Former Bosnian Serb army commander Mladic stands accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war committed against Bosnian Muslim, Bosnian Croat and other non-Serb civilians during the Bosnian war between May 1992 and late 1995.
His trial started on May 2012, the prosecution case concluded in February 2014 and the defense case began in May 2014. A trial judgement is expected in November 2017. Endit
