Austrian minister calls for police reinforcement to tackle migrant crisis

Xinhua, October 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner on Thursday called for an extra 1,500 to 2,000 police posts to be established in 2016 to better tackle the ongoing migrant crisis, the Kronen Zeitung newspaper reported.

The minister was quoted as saying in the report that police currently manning affected borders have been at their limits for weeks, and are presently doing all they can to keep the situation under control.

In September alone, border personnel worked a total of 420,000 working hours, almost half of which was overtime, the interior ministry stated.

Mikl-Leitner said recent developments have shown that Austria needs a security offensive, for which personnel must be optimally deployed.

She said that without the border control efforts along with the establishment of functioning hotspots in Greece to process incoming migrants to Europe, Austria would not be able to get on top of the situation. Endit
