Leftist rebel spokesman arrested in S. Philippines

A ranking leftist rebel was arrested in southern Philippines on Wednesday, police said.

Porferio Tuna Simon Santiago was apprehended by police and army personnel at a house in La Filipina village, in Mindanao's Tagum City, Davao del Norte province, 55 kilometers north of regional capital Davao, said Samuel Gadingan, provincial police chief.

Gadingan said Tuna, spokesperson and deputy secretary of the New People's Army Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC), was nabbed at La Filiipina village past 1 p.m. local time by virtue of an arrest warrant for kidnapping and serious illegal detention issued by a local court.

The arrested rebel spokesperson was now placed under police custody.

The 4, 000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces. Endit
