Brussels on Tuesday expressed welcome to Canada's decision on reopening its markets to European beef, which has been blocked for around two decades.
"It will provide a welcome boost to Europe's beef producers and exporters, particularly as it comes at a time when farmers across the EU are going through a particularly difficult period," said the European Commission in a statement.
The Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), said 19 member states, including Germany, France and Britain, gained re-authorizing at once from the Canadian side.
Canada introduced import restrictions on meat of ruminants on the basis of bovine spongiform encephalopathy concerns and closed to any EU beef, including deboned beef, since 1996.
Brussels said it has worked to reopen Canadian market under EU-Canada veterinary agreement since 1998. Endit
