(Recast)EU mission to conduct analysis of electoral process in Myanmar

The EU Election Observation Mission (EU ECM) will conduct a comprehensive analysis of Myanmar's electoral process based on a methodology developed by the EU during pre-election period, election period and post election period, Chief observer of EU EOM Alexander Graf Lambsdorff said on Tuesday.

Lambsdorff, who is also a vice president of the European Parliament, told the press conference here at the end of his five-day visit to Myanmar that EU EOM is impartial, independent and does not interfere in the electoral process.

He also emphasized the historic importance of the 2015 elections for Myanmar and its peoples.

During his visit, the Chief Observer met with chairman of Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) U Htay Oo, chairperson of National League for Democracy Aung San Suu Kyi and chairman of Union Election Commission U Tin Aye, Lambsdorff said.

EU EOM arrived in Myanmar on Sept. 26 with a core team of eight analysts. Thirty long-term observers were deployed on Oct. 11.

Sixty-two short-term observers together with a delegation of the European parliament and EU diplomats will reinforce the mission around election day, the press release said.

The EU ECM will deploy some 150 observers from all 28 member states as well as Norway, Switzerland and Canada throughout the country.

The EU EOM will issue a preliminary statement shortly after election day and a final report with technical recommendations at a later stage, according to the mission, it added.

According to Myanmar's Union Election Commission, a total of 6,072 candidates including 310 independents will run the upcoming general election set for Nov. 8. Enditem
