2015 projected as Fiji's best year for tourism

The year 2015 could be the most successful year for Fiji's tourism sector, Fijian Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Koya said on Tuesday.

Speaking in Nadi, Fiji's tourism hub on the the annual industry day for the Pacific island country's tourism sector, Koya said Fiji's tourism earnings for the first half of 2015 is some 323.3 million U.S. dollars, an increase of 12.3 percent compared with the same period of 2014.

From January to September, Fiji's total visitor arrivals stood at 574,685, an increase of 12 percent compared with the same period of last year, said Koya.

At this rate, the minister said, Fiji is on track to achieve or surpass the target of 714,000 visitor arrivals by the end of this year, making 2015 the most successful tourism year.

To date, 2014 has been the best year for Fiji's tourism sector, which represents one third of the island country's gross domestic product (GDP). Visitor arrivals stood at 692,630, a 5.3 percent increase from 2013, while 2014's tourism earnings stood at some 657.4 million U.S. dollars, a 6.6-percent increase.

Fiji has been making efforts to upgrade the country's tourism sector to a some 1 billion-U.S. dollar industry by 2020. Enditem
