A memorandum of understanding was signed between China and South Africa to boost cooperation and exchange in poverty reduction at a signing ceremony held on October 17 in Beijing.

China’s State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development together with South Africa’s Department of Rural Development and Land Reform will conduct exchange visits and policy dialogues in the field of poverty reduction to enhance capacity building, among other things, according to the newly-signed paper.

Liu Yongfu, Minister of China’s State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation and Development, said China and South Africa have the same priorities to develop their economies and improve people’s livelihoods. Moreover, the two countries share similar conditions in poverty. “China is willing to promote practical cooperation in terms of poverty alleviation with South Africa. Together, we can lift this cooperation to a higher level.”

Saturday was the 23rd International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It also marked China's second National Poverty Relief Day. The Chinese government will enact more support policies to lift the country's poorest 70 million people above the poverty line by 2020, while actively engaging in the global poverty alleviation plan, President Xi Jinping pledged on Friday.
