UN Security Council slams terrorist attacks by extremist group Boko Haram

Xinhua, October 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

The UN Security Council on Monday condemned "in the strongest terms" the terrorist attacks attributed to Boko Haram in recent days, which resulted in a large number of deaths and casualties.

Reports said militants from the Islamic group Boko Haram have conducted two simultaneous suicide attacks in Kangaleri, Cameroon, Monday.

The Nigeria-based extremist group is also responsible for five simultaneous suicide attacks Saturday in Baga Sola, Chad. Three of the suicide bombers were reportedly young girls.

"The members of the Security Council reiterated their determination to combat all forms of terrorism, in accordance with their responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations," said a press statement released here.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also slammed the attacks, saying "there is no justification for such indiscriminate violence and killings," according to statements released by his spokesperson.

Boko Haram has wreaked havoc through a wave of bombings, assassinations and abductions, in its attempt to overthrow the Nigerian government and create an Islamic state. It has killed more than 13,000 people and abducted hundreds more since it started its operations in 2009.

Over the past few months, the extremist group has been engaging in an armed struggle with Nigerian army aided by troops from Chad, Niger, Benin and Cameroon, which started their ground and aerial offensives in March. Endit
