Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Nepal's newly-elected Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli on Sunday and congratulated him.

"The prime minister is looking forward to working closely with Mr Oli," read a press release issued after the telephone conversation between the two prime ministers on Sunday evening.

Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist), was elected as the 38th prime minister of the country through parliamentary vote on Sunday afternoon.

"India will continue to extend all assistance, in accordance with the aspirations of the people of Nepal, for peace, stability and socio-economic development of the country," it added.

During the telephone conversation, Modi conveyed to Prime Minister Oli that India wishes to see peace, prosperity and progress in Nepal.

The Indian premier also expressed confidence that the Oli-led government will address "the remaining political issues confronting the country in a spirit of dialogue and reconciliation. " He also invited Oli to visit India soon. Endi
