One people was killed and three others injured after a fight turned violent between two groups of students at the Northern Arizona University's Flagstaff campus early Friday morning.

The suspect shooter was identified as Steven Jones, an 18-year-old freshman at the school, who opened fire with a handgun on other students. He was detained by the police. The three injured were sent to hospital.

The fight broke out between two groups of students at the University's Flagstaff campus at around 1:20 a.m. local time (0820 GMT). According to the campus police, several students in two separate student groups, including Jones, got into the confrontation.

Campus police arrived at the scene and apprehended Jones "without further trouble" after the shooting.

In Arizona, students are banned from carrying guns around campus but are allowed to store them in their cars.

The University's Flagstaff campus has more than 20,000 students.

U.S. President Barack Obama is expected to visit the state of Oregon Friday and to meet with families of victims in a deadly shooting at the state's Umpqua Community College last week. Ten people were killed and 20 others wounded in the shooting. Endit
