Chinese envoy calls for active efforts to support Haiti's elections

Xinhua, October 9, 2015 Adjust font size:

A Chinese envoy to the UN on Thursday urged the international community to make active efforts in supporting Haiti's upcoming elections.

China's permanent representative to the UN Liu Jieyi told a UN Security Council meeting that although Haiti's security situation is stable and economies continues to grow, "the situation in Haiti remains complex and fragile," given increasing cases of cholera and enormous humanitarian tasks.

China hopes that the international community will make active efforts to move forward Haiti's elections, he said, noting "whether this round of elections succeeds will bear significantly on the political process in Haiti."

Haiti is scheduled to hold the second round of legislative election, the presidential election and the municipal vote on Oct. 25. The first round of legislative election took place in August this year.

"China hopes that all the Haitian parties will refrain from violence, retain their unity and work together to create good conditions for the election," Liu said.

He called on the international community and the regional organizations concerned to continue their vigorous support and provide monitoring and coordination.

The Chinese envoy also pointed out that lack of development is the root cause of Haiti's political and social problems and urged the international community to deliver their commitment of assistance to Haiti.

In 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti and killed more than 200,000 people. The disaster has dealt a major blow to country's already shaky economy, infrastructure and political landscape. Endit
