U.S. Air Force airman Spencer Stone, who helped stop a gunman on a French train in August, was stabbed early Thursday morning in Sacramento, the state capital of California, Air Force officials said.
Stone, 23, was stabbed four times in the chest and was "transported to a local hospital, and is currently being treated for injury," Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Karns was quoted as saying in an email to Air Force Times.
He was currently in serious condition at a medical center.
On Aug. 21, in what was believed to be a potential mass shooting on a train traveling from Amsterdam to Paris, Stone and his friends Anthony Sadler, 23, and Alek Skarlatos, 22, were credited with taking down Ayoub El Khazzani, a 25-year-old Moroccan, after he opened fire.
Stone grew up near Sacramento.
Sacramento police tweeted that "the assault incident is not related to a terrorist act. Assault occurred near a bar, alcohol is believed to be a factor."
Police officers responded to a call at 12:46 a.m. and found a man in his mid-20s was stabbed in an area that includes bars and clubs.
In an email sent to reporters, officer Traci Trapani said "it is believed that the victim was out with a group of friends when a physical altercation led to the victim being stabbed multiple times in his upper body."
Reports said detectives were looking for footage from a security video camera at a liquor store near the scene that may reveal details of the altercation. Endit
