Latvia to criminalize match-fixing

Xinhua, October 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Latvian parliament legal affairs committee on Tuesday endorsed a bill criminalising match-fixing in sports.

Under the bill drawn up by the Justice Ministry match-fixing will be made a criminal offence carrying a prison sentence of one to five years, community service or a fine.

The draft legislation also provides a definition for match-fixing and expressly forbids any rigging of sport competitions.

Latvian Justice Minister Dzintars Rasnacs said he expected the new amendments to the Penal Law and Sport Law to take effect as of Jan. 1, 2016.

Zorzs Tikmers, secretary-general of the Latvian Olympic Committee (LOC), also voiced hope that adoption of the bill will be completed by the end of this year. Endit
