Belarus starts voting for presidential election ahead of schedule

Voting of the presidential election started across Belarus Tuesday, five days ahead of the schedule for the event, said a source from Belarusian Central Election Commission.

In accordance with the schedule, the presidential election in Belarus will take place Sunday.

Early voting is introduced in order to vote in advance for a candidate if any citizen who for whatever reason can not come to the polling station on the day of elections. Early voting is possible at polling stations inside the country and those set up abroad. Polling stations will also be opened at military units, said the source.

In the days of early voting, polling stations will be open till 19:00 each day, with breaks from 14:00 to 16:00.

Citizens over 18 years old have voting rights in Belarus, which now has a population of 9.5 million.

More than 7 million ballot papers have been printed in Belarus for the forthcoming presidential election. A total of 910 international observers have been accredited by Belarusian Central Election Commission to observe the counting of votes.

There are four candidates for the presidential race, including incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko, activist of the 'Say the Truth!' campaign Tatiana Korotkevich and leader of the Belarusian Liberal Democratic Party Sergei Gaidukevich. Endit
