Bulgarian customs find 42.4 kg of heroin in truck wheel rims

Xinhua, October 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs officers in the Black Sea port of Burgas have seized 42.4 kg of heroin hidden in the wheel rims of a truck originating in Georgia, officials said Monday.

The heroin was found by a customs dog and subsequent screening with a specialized X-ray system in the Volvo tow truck that arrived by ferry from the port of Batumi, some 380 km west of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, the National Customs Agency said in a press release.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 2.45 million U.S. dollars.

The driver of the vehicle, a Turkish citizen, was arrested on the scene.

Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe. In 2014, the Balkan country seized more than 1 ton of heroin, 50 tons of marijuana, 0.1 ton of cocaine and half a ton of synthetic drugs. Endit
