Draw in Madrid derby keeps Villarreal top in Spain

Xinhua, October 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Real Madrid missed a chance to go top of Spain's BBVA Primera Liga as Luciano Vietto scored a late equalizer for Atletico Madrid in Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium on Sunday.

Vietto pounced on an error by Real Madrid goalkeeper Keymor Navas, who failed to gather a cross from Atletico substitute Jackson Martinez with seven minutes left on the clock.

Karim Benzema opened the scoring after nine minutes with a header, but Atletico should have been level just 10 minutes later after they were awarded a penalty. Navas confirmed his hero status with Real Madrid fans as he saved Antoine Griezmann' s spot kick, which was hit towards the corner, but at a saveable height.

Football can be a cruel game for goalkeepers, however, and Navas will look at his later error as that which cost his side the leadership.

Villarreal remain top despite suffering a surprise defeat to Levante after playing for 55 minutes after their defender Bojan Jokic was sent off for two yellow cards.

Villarreal almost held on for a point, but finally succumbed to a volleyed goal from Deyverson Silva seven minutes from the end to lose 1-0.

Aritz Aduriz led Athletic Club Bilbao's excellent fightback as the Basque side came back from conceding a goal to a Dani Parejo free kick to produce a convincing 3-1 at home to Valencia.

Aymeric Laporte equalized 10 minutes before halftime before Aduriz set up Markel Susaeta to put Athletic ahead 10 minutes after the break and then confirm the win himself after great work from Raul Garcia.

Goals from Ruben Castro and Heiko Westermann gave Betis their second away win in a week as they completed a smash and grab raid away to a Rayo Vallecano side that created and missed enough chances to have taken something from the match.

Saturday saw Barcelona's worrying form continue as they lost 2-1 away to Sevilla.

The goals all came in the second half as Michael Krohn-Delhi and Vicente Iborra put the home side 2-0 ahead and although Neymar scored a controversial penalty for Barca 15 minutes from time, Sevilla withstood a late siege to their goal to hang on for the points.

It was the first time Sevilla coach Unai Emery had seen a team he coaches beat Barca in 22 attempts.

Malaga striker Charles may be forgiven for thinking the saying 'it never rains but it pours' is true as his hat-trick gave his side their first goals and their first win of the season in the seventh match of the season.

Malaga finally ended their drought by defeating Real Sociedad 3-1 to increase the pressure on David Moyes.

Goals from Saul Berjon and Borja Baston continued Eibar's fine start to the campaign as the Basque side won 2-0 away to Las Palmas, while Alex Menendez's injury time winner saw Sporting Gijon take all three points from their visit to play Espanyol. Alan Halilovic had put Sporting ahead early in the game, although Felipe Caicedo drew Espanyol level in the 62nd minute.

Meanwhile Granada are still struggling after a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo la Coruna. Fajr opened the scoring for Deportivo, but Piti assured a share of the points in the second half.

Friday night saw Celta and Getafe draw 0-0. Endi
