India mulls single emergency number, panic button in all mobile phones

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

India is mulling to set 112 as the single emergency number like 911 in the United States, as well as to introduce a panic button in all mobile phones.

Sources said Friday that India's telecommunications department has recently given nod to the telecom regulator's 112 emergency number proposal.

The existing emergency numbers -- 100, 101, 102 and 108 -- will be phased out gradually, but they will exist for the time being and will be redirected to 112, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has come up with the idea of a panic button in all mobile phones for women's safety and has asked manufacturers to conduct a feasibility study.

Indian Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said that all mobile phones will have a panic button that will be GPS- connected.

"We are in conversation with phone manufacturers and the proposal is likely to be executed in few months," she added. Endi
