Indian navy chief to visit Australia this week

Indian navy chief Admiral R.K. Dhowan will visit Australia this week in a bid to bolster defense ties between the two countries.

During his trip till Oct. 7 Admiral Dhowan will meet his Australian counterpart, the defense secretary and other senior naval officers, a defense statement said Friday.

The visit aims at consolidating existing maritime cooperation initiatives as well as exploring new avenues, it said.

"India-Australia have several commonalities, which serve as foundation for closer cooperation and multifaceted interactions," the statement said.

Stating that both countries share similar maritime challenges such as long coastline, coastal security, it added: "Both navies have opportunities to learn from each other's experiences." Endi
