Burkina Faso gov't promises "fair" trial for coup plotters

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Burkina Faso government on Thursday gave a reassurance that those who organized last month's failed coup, led by Gen. Gilbert Diendere, will be tried in a "fair" process.

"All those arrested and charged in relation to the failed coup will be prosecuted in a fair process," the government said in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

The statement said the judicial process had already began and investigations, questioning as well as searches at homes of the suspects are still ongoing.

Gen Diendere who organized the Sept. 17 failed coup against the transition government, and who took refuge at the Vatican Embassy in Ouagadougou, was handed over to authorities to answer for his crimes.

The former chief of staff during the regime of President Blaise Compaore who was deposed in October 2014, had promised to hand himself to Burkina Faso's judicial authorities to respond to charges relating to the coup which left at least 11 people dead and 200 others injured.

Transition Prime Minister Yacouba Isaac Zida warned after the first cabinet meeting following the coup on Sept. 25 that the perpetrators will immediately face the law.

On Sept. 26, the public prosecutor ordered the freezing of accounts of all those suspected of involvement in the coup. Endit
