Suspected members of Nigeria's Boko Haram terrorist group razed down a Cameroonian village in the Far North region during an attack on Wednesday night, military sources told Xinhua Thursday.
The sources said five of the attackers were captured by the population in a neighbouring village, and also added that no lives were lost in the attack.
Coming from the Lake Chad region aboard some boats, the suspected jihadists whose number was estimated to be in tens, forced their way into Siguel village in the Far North region and destroyed some property at around 8:00 p.m. local time, before heading to the neighbouring locality of Bodo, the same sources said.
In Bodo village, the sources continued, the population got a warning signal issued by members of the village self-defense committee that was set up by themselves, using security measures outlined by administrative authorities.
The villagers mobilized themselves quickly, causing panic among the assailants who started running in different directions. Five of them were arrested in the process.
In a retaliatory attack, Boko Haram fighters invaded Mafoufou, another village in the same region, and practically razed down the entire village by burning down houses.
However, no death was reported as the population was alerted early and fled from their houses, the source said.
The village whose population is estimated to be about 200 people, mostly has grass-thatched houses.
The Nigerian terrorist group has multiplied attacks in Cameroon despite operationalization of the Joint Multinational Force of the Lake Chad Commission Basin.
On Saturday, eight people were killed and over 100 houses burnt in Tika, another locality in Far North Cameroon, which has witnessed numerous suicide-attacks since July. Endit
