DR Congo's main opposition party to meet over poll process

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS), the party of veteran opposition leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) Etienne Tshisekedi, will hold its national congress to discuss most pressing issues, key among them the electoral process.

UDPS Spokesman Bruno Tshibala said on Wednesday in Kinshasa that the congress will come up with the party's clear position on several issues, especially the electoral process, and will shed more light on negotiations that took place in Spain between the party and the Presidential Majority camp.

The November congress will also enable UDPS to restructure its internal and external organs.

On Sept. 19, some UDPS members in Europe announced the sacking of Tshisekedi from his post of national president of UDPS for extended absence from the national and international scene.

Andre Kalonzo Ilunga, UDPS representative in the U.S., Belgium and at the United Nations, was declared as the party's interim president.

Ilunga who now considers himself as the interim UDPS president, said his first mission is to return the party on the national and international scene, and strengthen its grassroots networks. Endit
