A shooting at a community college in the U.S. state of Oregon on Thursday killed 10 people and wounded 20 others, local media reported, citing state police.

At least one female at the Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon was shot in the chest, said the report, adding that casualty figures were expected to rise.

"Active shooter scene is code 4. Multiple casualties all pt's transported," the Douglas County Fire Department said on its twitter account.

Emergency crews responded at about 10:40 a.m. local time to reports of the shooting.

Law enforcement said a lone shooter was neutralized. And unconfirmed reports said the lone suspect is a male, and his identity was withheld for the time being.

Ray Shoufler, a fire marshal of Douglas County, was quoted as saying that the shooting, as well as casualties, took place within classrooms at the two-year school with some 3,300 full-time students.

Agents with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive were sent to the scene.

The college campus was immediately placed under lockdown. Telephone call to the school was answered with a recorded message. Endit
