Denmark to move thousands of gov't jobs to provinces

The Danish government plans to move some 3,900 public sector jobs from the capital city of Copenhagen to 38 cities in the provinces in a bid to spur growth throughout the nation, the country's prime minister said Thursday.
"The government wants a better balance in Denmark. Therefore we are bringing government jobs closer to citizens and businesses," said Lars Loekke Rasmussen when rolling out the plan, adding that it is the largest relocation ever.
According to the prime minister, the relocation that accounts for some 10 percent of all government jobs currently located in Copenhagen, is expected to boost the number of local jobs in outer areas of Denmark.
Among the institutions to be moved out of the capital is the Danish Immigration Service, the Danish Institute for International Studies, and the Danish Nature Agency.
The announcement has however drawn criticism from some organizations affected. The Danish Institute for International Studies criticized the proposal, calling it a "loss of knowledge for the people and the parliament."
The relocation will cost some 400 million Danish kroner and is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2017, according to the plan. (1 U.S. dollar = 6.65 Danish kroner) Enditem
