Iran supports Russia's military operations in Syria

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Iran supports Russian military action against terrorism in Syria, Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

"Given the official request of the Syrian government from the Russian Federation, Iran acknowledges Russia's military operation against terrorist groups in Syria," Marzieh Afkham, spokesperson for foreign ministry, was quoted as saying by official IRNA news agency.

She added that her country considers Russia's operation as a path towards resolving the ongoing crisis in the region.

She also urged an international cooperation with the governments of Iraq and Syria to eradicate terrorism in those countries.

"It is a must to confront and root out terrorism which is a common threat against regional and global peace and security," she said.

Russia started airstrikes against terrorist groups in Syria on Wednesday after the Russian Federation Council, the upper house of parliament, granted President Vladimir Putin the right to send troops abroad. Endit
