Montenegro calls for international action to end conflicts in world

Xinhua, October 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Montenegro on Thursday called for international action to end conflicts in such countries as Ukraine and Libya, stressing that the relevant action must be conducted "in accordance with the norms of international law."

Filip Vujanovic, the president of Montenegro, made the statement as he was speaking at the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its fourth day here Thursday.

"Putting an end to conflict and peace re-building should be our joint effort," the president said. "Therefore, international action in accordance with the norms of international law is essential for putting an end to violence in Ukraine, Syria, Iraq and Libya and other crisis areas."

"In conflict resolution, the use of preventive diplomacy, in particular mediation is necessary," he said. "In this regard, strengthening the capacity of the UN so that this global organization would be able to respond to the growing needs in this field is an imperative."

Meanwhile, he also called upon the international community to join hands in fighting terrorism.

"Serious human rights violations, as well as the intensification of violence and crimes committed by terrorist and extremist groups -- ISIL (the Islamic State), and Boko Haram -- clearly show that terrorism poses a serious threat to international peace and security," he said. "Therefore, global engagement is the only way of protection." Enditem
