Afghan president constitutes commission to investigate fall of Kunduz city to Taliban

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday said the he has constituted a commission to probe the fall of the northern Kunduz city to Taliban militants on Monday.
"A commission has been constituted to investigate the reason for the fall of Kunduz city and legal action within the framework of the law of the land would be taken against any responsible official who committed negligence or treason," Ghani said at a press conference in Arg or Presidential Palace.
Taliban militants in a surprise attack captured Kunduz city , the capital of Kunduz province 250 km north of Kabul on Monday.
The unexpected fall of Kunduz city to the Taliban militants in a few hours has created variety of questions about the ability of Afghan national security forces and possible secret deals with the Taliban outfit.
Some Afghans including some parliamentarians have accused the alleged "fifth column" within the government and officials including governor of Kunduz province Mohammad Omar Safi of siding with the Taliban militants to overrun Kunduz city.
President Ghani sacked governor of Kunduz province on Thursday.
"If anyone has evidence to prove the involvement of any official in Kunduz collapse should share the evidence with the fact finding commission or national intelligence agency," the president said.
However, he added, "We should avoid creating distrust among people. The court should decide against alleged persons."
Afghan security forces backed by U.S. military aircrafts launched counter-offensive at 11:00 p.m. local time Wednesday and recaptured the Kunduz city at 05:00 a.m. local time Thursday, Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini told Xinhua.
More than 150 Taliban militants, according to a statement of interior ministry have been killed during the cleanup operations in Kunduz city and the operations are continuing. Endi
