Angola calls for new climate change agreement in favor of developing countries

Xinhua, October 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Angola on Thursday called climate change "one of the greatest challenges facing humanity," saying that a new agreement, expected to be reached in Paris in December, must be conducive to the protection of the right to development and to the strengthening of resilience in developing countries.

The statement came as Manuel Domingos Vicente, vice president of Angola, was taking the floor at the annual high-level debate of the UN General Assembly, which entered its fourth day here Thursday.

"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity," Vicente said. "For this reason, adopting a protocol that will govern the Global Action to protect the Climate System during the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is of the highest importance."

The United Nations is leading the world efforts to reach an agreement at the Paris conference to fight climate change.

"This agreement should include a commitment to limit the increase in average global temperature to 1.5 degree Celsius by the end of the century," he said.

"Likewise, the new agreement must include models of sharing enabling tools to protect the right to development and to strengthen resilience in developing countries," he added. Enditem
