Refugees in Myanmar northernmost state increase year by year: camp administrator

Xinhua, October 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Refugees in Myanmar's northernmost Kachin state are increasing year by year with no reduction due to several years armed clashes, an administrator of a church-run refugee camp in Myitgyina said Thursday.

Jat Mai Kaung KBC Church refugee camp is the biggest camp of its kind in the Kachin state capital accommodating 1,072 refugees of 205 households involving over 400 children, Ma Chan Lom told Xinhua.

Furthermore, the four-year-old Jat Mai Kaung KBC Church refugee camp is sheltering those from nearby villages such as Pha-Kant, Sunparabun, Namhsam, she said, adding that there are a total of 25 such refugee camps in the town.

According to Ma, the food consumed in the refugee camp is mainly provided by the World Food Program (WFP) with the rest being supplied by UN High Commissioner for Refugee (UNHCR) and KBC. The state government takes responsibility for education and health.

She disclosed that there were some Kachin ethnic organizations coming to the KBC camp for election campaigning, saying that the refugees will cast vote for the upcoming election.

Birth rate in the camp is increasing year by year. The refugees hope to return to their own village homes, she added.

Ethnic armed conflicts, which continued for the past several years, have driven local people out of their homeland. Endi
