Jordan eyes renewed gas import from Egypt

Xinhua, October 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Jordanian prime minister said Thursday that Amman wants to resume importing gas from Egypt, state-run Petra news agency reported.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour told visiting Egyptian Energy Minister Tareq Al Mullah that Jordan hopes to get some of the natural gas to be produced in the newly discovered Zohl gas field in the Mediterranean.

The two sides expressed readiness to strengthen energy cooperation.

The Egyptian minister said Egypt is keen on speeding up efforts to develop the gas field, which has an estimated reserve of 30 trillion cubic feet.

Jordan, which imports about 90 percent of its energy needs annually, used to generate about 80 percent of its electricity based on natural gas imported from Egypt.

At the beginning of 2011 and in the aftermath of unrest across the Arab world, militants bombed the gas pipeline supplying Jordan with Egyptian gas. Gas supply to Jordan has since been disrupted.

Jordan was forced to switch to buying more expensive heavy fuel and diesel for power generation after the cut in gas from Egypt. Endit
