National University of Singapore crowned as Asia's best university: Times Higher Education

Xinhua, October 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

National University of Singapore (NUS) was named Asia's best university and ranked 26th globally, according to the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2015-2016.

NUS is the only Asian university to be among the world's top 30 based on THE's World University Rankings, which draws on data from 1,100 institutions, 11 million academic papers, and more than 11, 000 academic surveys to develop a list of top 800 universities from some 70 countries.

The ranking employs 13 separate performance indicators to reflect a university's strengths in five pillars, namely, teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. NUS is in the global top 10 for international outlook and global top 30 for teaching and research.

This is the first time that NUS ranked the first place in Asia' s universities in the 12-year history of THE World University Rankings.

"NUS has proven its strength in depth against the highest global standards. NUS's new position as Asia's top university and among the very best of the world's elite research universities is thoroughly deserved," said Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan said that the achievements are the result of the strong support from the government, as well as commitment to excellence by the faculty, staff and students, according a news release by NUS on Thursday.

NUS placed 12th according to Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)'s global university rankings for 2015/2016, which was released in the prior month. Endi
