Colombia's northern city of Medellin will host the 2016 UCI (International Cycling Union) BMX World Championships, local press reported Wednesday.

The announcement was made at the end of the 2015 worlds in South Carolina, the United States.

The BMX competition will be held in May 2016 in a cycling complex that is under construction and will be named "Mariana Pajon", in honor of Colombian female BMX cyclist and several times world champion, who was born in Medellin.

Colombian sports officials as well as Medellin authorities attended the ceremony in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where they announced that the construction of new cycling complex will be finished at the end of October.

Jorge Oviedo, manager of the Colombian Cycling Federation, said Medellin is a modern city that is ready to host the international competition.

The ceremony was also attended by Mariana Pajon, who said: "My city is waiting for you. We have a great track and incredible people that will welcome you with open arms. We want you to come to Medellin, to visit my country, we want to give everyone the best experience possible." Endi
