Afghan security forces backed by the air power recaptured the northern Kunduz city and evicted Taliban militants from the city early on Thursday, Khalid Amiri, an army commander in the province, said.

All parts of the city have been recaptured from militants and cleanup operations have been continuing in all parts of the city to search for insurgents, the official added.

"The operations backed by U.S. military aircraft began at 11:00 p.m. local time Wednesday and recaptured the city at 05:00 a.m. local time Thursday," Hussaini told Xinhua.

"Scores of Taliban militants have been killed during the operation which is going on to ensure lasting peace in Kunduz city and adjoining areas," Hussaini asserted.
