Brazil's Rousseff fires health minister

Xinhua, September 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Tuesday fired Health Minister Arthur Chioro in order to pave the way for a cabinet reform.

Chioro was already considered out of the cabinet. Last week, it became known that the Health Ministry would change hands. However, Chioro had not been formally informed of the move.

Chioro is affiliated to Rousseff's Workers' Party. His successor remains unknown, but will most certainly come from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), the largest ally of the Workers' Party.

Rousseff needs the PMDB's help to carry out her administration's fiscal adjustment and avoid impeachment, but her relationship with the party has been rocky in the past year. Giving more positions to the PMDB is widely regarded as a move to ensure the party's support at a key moment.

Besides the Health Ministry, which has the highest budget in the federal administration, the PMDB is expected to get another five or six posts. Endi
