Chinese students win France's prize for autonomous driving project

Xinhua, September 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Chinese students have been awarded 100,000 euros (111,989 U.S. dollars) in France for their innovative project on autonomous cars, Valeo group, the organizer of annual Innovation Challenge contest announced Tuesday.

The "Falcon View" team from Peking University won 2015 prize as "they came up with a new way for autonomous cars to detect their surroundings" and "built a cheaper wheel-based system, using a camera instead of lasers," the French automotive supplier said in a press release posted on its website.

The jury, which included Valeo Chief Executive Officer Jacques Aschenbroich and veterans scientists, picked German team "Auto Gen Z" from Saarland University and Indian team "M.A.D" from Sri Aurobindo International Center of Education in Pondicherry at the second winner.

Each team gained 10,000 euros for their innovation "in designing products or systems that will create smarter, more intuitive cars".

In Valeo second Innovation Challenge, 1,324 teams from 89 countries participated "to invent and develop bold, revolutionary solutions for the automobile of 2030," the group said.

For 2016 edition, the group called on candidates to focus on projects based on technological innovation and ideas for using cars in new ways. Winners of each category would get 100,000 euros. (1 euro = 1.119 U.S. dollar) Endit
