Burkina Faso's ex-FM denies conspiring with coup plotters

Xinhua, September 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Djibrill Bassole, former Foreign Minister during the regime of Burkina Faso's deposed President Blaise Compaore, has denied accusations by the transition government of him associating with Gen. Gilbert Diendere who organized the recent failed coup.

"I am saddened, but not surprised with the statement from the transition government associating me with those who tried to destabilize the country," Bassole said, alleging that there is a "smear campaign against him."

Bassole, who was a presidential candidate, was disqualified from contesting by the Constitutional Council for having been Compaore's close ally.

On Monday, the transition government accused some individuals, including Bassole, of working with former coup plotters who had refused to disarm and calling foreign 'jihadists' to help them achieve their evil objective.

"I appeal to the population across the country, as well as security forces to remain calm and peaceful," Bassole said, demonstrating his respect for the transition government. Endit
