Xinhua, September 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Afghan security forces launched counter-offensive on Tuesday morning to retake the northern Kunduz city and expel Taliban militants from the area, Kunduz police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hussaini said.

"The government forces launched well-coordinated offensive from five directions early Tuesday to expel Taliban rebels and recapture Kunduz city," Hussaini told reporters via telephone.

Security forces have so far recaptured Kunduz prison and new building of the provincial police station, Hussaini said, adding more details will be shared with media later in the day.

Taliban militants who in a surprised attack captured major parts of the strategically important Kunduz city on Monday morning have yet to make comment. Endi
