Brazil to generate more GDP if cutting carbon emissions: study

Brazil can generate an extra 148 billion U.S. dollars in the gross domestic product (GDP) from 2015 to 2030 if the government adopts measures to reduce carbon emissions, a report says.

The report considers a number of scenarios and indicators, such as the inflation rate, unemployment and families' consumption, to establish how much impact the reduction of carbon emissions would have in the Brazilian economy, the state news agency Agencia Brasil reported Monday.

Coordinators of the study Luiz Pinguelli Rosa and Emilio La Rovere, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, said that initiatives such as low carbon agriculture can be used to turn Brazil into a green economy.

More investments in public transportation and an increase in the use of biofuels can also help Brazil reduce carbon emissions, they said.

Brazil is widely known as one of the countries which reduced its carbon emissions most in recent years.
