Godoy Cruz fires coach Heinze

Xinhua, September 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Argentinian soccer club Godoy Cruz de Mendoza sacked coach Gabriel Heinze on Sunday due to a string of bad results in the local league.

The two-time World Cup player and Olympic gold medalist in Athens 2004 had an abrupt end to his brief first attempt at coaching with the Mendoza-based team, in the central-west region of Cuyo.

On Friday, Godoy Cruz lost against Olimpo 0-1 in the 26th week of the First Division championship. Currently the team are in 25th place out of 30 teams with 25 points.

Heinze, who previously played defence for Real Madrid (Spain), Manchester United (England) and Roma (Italy), coached the Argentinian side for ten matches. The team won two, drew two and lost six.

Fans did not support the 37-year-old former player because he was not authorized to set foot on the pitches or in the dugouts as he had not completed the required training from the Argentine Coaches Association.

The club's president Jose Mansur announced that Heinze would be temporarily replaced by Daniel Oldra who has coached the team various times. Endi
