The chief of the German automotive industry said on Friday that manipulations of emissions were not acceptable.
Speaking at a press conference at the Frankfurt Auto Show here, Matthias Wissmann said that the German auto industry is dismayed by the manipulation of emissions test of Volkswagen in the United States.
He called for full and consistent investigation into the issue and said the auto industry supports efforts by authorities in their work for comprehensive clarification and examination.
At the same time, Wissmann maintained that the issue is not a general problem with diesel vehicles. "Our companies have developed the modern diesel technologies that lead to the lowest pollutant emissions." The emissions cheating scandal, according to Wissmann, "does not change this one bit". According to Wissmann, it is not fair to suspect the whole auto industry because of the emissions rig issue of Volkswagen.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the software on VW diesel cars showed false emission data. The software installed by Volkswagen in its cars has violated the Clean Air Act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a statement on Friday.
According to the findings of EPA, the software called "defeat device" by the EPA can turn on full emission controls only when the car is undergoing emission tests to make the car meet the legal emission standards, but during normal driving, the car will emit nitrogen oxides at up to 40 times the standard.
The allegations cover roughly 482,000 diesel passenger cars sold in the United States by Volkswagen AG, Audi AG, and Volkswagen Group of America since 2008. The models include Jetta, Beetle, Golf, Passat and Audi A3.
Volkswagen on Tuesday admitted that a total of 11 million diesel cars might have been involved in the emissions manipulation issue. Endit
