Conmebol mulls Copa Libertadores prizemoney boost

Xinhua, September 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

South American football's governing body Conmebol said Friday it is considering increasing Copa Libertadores prizemoney next year.

Clubs have long been critical of the financial incentives offered in South America's premier club competition. Winners of the tournament currently receive a maximum of 5.1 million US dollars, or 5.3 million dollars if they progress via the qualifying round.

"The (Conmebol) president (Juan Angel) Napout makes it clear that there is a firm proposal to increase prizemoney for participating teams," Conmebol said in an official statement.

"That is why major negotiations have been taking place for some time that will allow the institution to generate greater revenue for associations and clubs."

The announcement comes amid reports that Italian businessman Riccardo Silva is planning an Americas-wide Champions League.

Under Silva's plans, the winners of the new competition would receive 30 million US dollars, according to media reports. Endit
