Slovenia confirms Hungary erecting fence along border

Xinhua, September 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovenian authority on Thursday confirmed that Hungary has started building a barbed wire fence along its border, in a continuation of a policy aimed at stopping illegal migration.

The Slovenian mayor of the border town of Lendava, Anton Balazek, made confirmation to Slovenian Press Agency (STA) that the neighboring country had started erecting a fence without giving notice to Slovenian part in advance and details.

According to a report by Hungary's MTI news agency Hungarian police and army were putting up a barbed wire fence at the Pince-Tornyiszentmiklos motorway border crossing and the nearby crossing on the regional road on Thursday.

Slovenian Foreign Minister Karl Erjavec said Slovenia was surprized by Hungary's failure to notify its plans. However, his ministry is monitoring developments and has contacted Hungary, he said.

Erjavec will next try to get in touch with his Hungarian counterpart in an effort to pass on the message that there is no need to erect a fence along the border. Enditem
