Venezuelan president to attend UN Summit, calls for reform of UN

Xinhua, September 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday announced he would attend the UN Sustainable Development Summit to be held in New York in the coming days, and urged to reform the organization.

Maduro said he would present at the summit Venezuela's achievements in education, healthcare, social equalities and other drives started by late President Hugo Chavez and continued by his government.

Over 140 world leaders will be present at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015 slated for Sept. 25-27 and expected to adopt the post-2015 development agenda.

"We have called for an expansion of the Security Council and many other proposals. It's time for a complete renovation and reform of the United Nations system," Maduro said in his weekly TV program.

Maduro added he would meet with leaders of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other non-OPEC oil exporting nations.

He stressed the importance of establishing "alliances" with OPEC nations to stabilize the oil market, which has been plunging since mid-2014. Endi
