France calls for fair elections in Burkina Faso as soon as possible

France fully supports the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) in order to hold as soon as possible fair and transparent elections in Burkina Faso, French presidential office the Elysee said Monday night.

During a phone discussion with his Senegalese counterpart Macky Sall, chairman of the ECOWAS, French president Francois Hollande condemned in the strongest terms the coup d'etat in Burkina Faso, and thanked Macky Sall for his "personal investment in solving the political crisis in that country."

Hollande also announced that France reserved the right to apply sanctions against those who would oppose the holding of fair elections.

According to the Elysee, all civil, financial and military cooperation between France and Burkina Faso were suspended until the effective resumption of the political transition to under civilian authority.

Hollande called on all forces involved in the coup to immediately disarm and return power to the legitimate authorities, otherwise "they should bear all the consequences," said the Elysee. Enditem
