Criminal probe nearing end into deadly Christchurch quake building

Xinhua, September 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand police investigating the collapse of a building that killed 115 people, most of them young students from Asia, in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake said Thursday they hope to make a decision regarding criminal liability for the collapse later this year.

The probe into the collapse of the CTV building had progressed significantly, with a large amount of information from a range of sources collated and evaluated to assess whether there was sufficient evidence to proceed with a criminal case, said a statement from the New Zealand Police.

The investigation team had interviewed more than 100 witnesses, and executed a number of search warrants in June in relation to the enquiry.

The victims' families were being kept informed of the progress of the investigation.

Most of the 185 people killed in the 6.3-magnitude quake of February 2011 died in the building when it collapsed and caught fire. Endi
