Hungary to close 2 border crossings with Serbia for 30 days: Serbian Foreign Ministry

Xinhua, September 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Serbian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday published an official note received from Hungary revealing two border crossings between the two countries will be closed for 30 days due to the escalating refugee crisis.

The notification from the Hungarian embassy in Belgrade came one day after Hungary shut the gates at these entrances and set up heavy police presence and anti-demonstration equipment.

This has blocked thousands of refugees and migrants from the Middle East and Africa.

"As the situation at the border crossings are a threat to Hungary's public safety, caused by mass migration, the Hungarian side is implementing temporary suspension of the agreement on the control of road, rail and water trans-boundary movements between the government of the Republic of Serbia and the government of Hungary," the note reads.

Some 3,000 refugees have been camping on the road and fields in vicinity of the two border crossings, according to a UNHCR official, protesting and asking to be allowed to cross through Hungary on their way to Germany and other European and Scandinavian countries.

In the meantime, more refugees are arriving in Serbia, Hungary's southern neighbor. Endit
